SMART Program for First Responders

The SMART Program is the result of a longstanding partnership with HEART 9/11 (first responders on and after 9/11), the Newtown, Connecticut Police Department (first responders during the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in 2012) and the Benson-Henry Institute for Mind-Body Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital.

The primary goal of the SMART Program is to provide first responders with the tools to develop resiliency.

At the culmination of this training, participants will:

  •   be able to understand the neurobiology of stress and its effect on job performance and personal relationships

  • learn how to elicit the relaxation response, become aware of identifying the stress of others, and assist others under stress

  •   know how to identify their stressors, regain control, and build resilience through various mind-body principles and self-care interventions

SMART Offerings

Introductory Program: Attendees are introduced to the basic tenets of the SMART Program through a condensed version of the eight core modules. Best suited for veteran officers, newly promoted supervisors and specialized training candidates.

Responder Training Program: Utilizing real-life examples, this training is designed to build a life-changing practice. Training appropriate for recruits and veteran officers with chronic stress issues, burn out, allostatic load issues or significantly acute, unmanageable incidents.

Train-the-Trainer Program: (Responder Training is a prerequisite): In addition to the core program, participants are required to participate in a 2-day implementation class taught by Dr. John Denninger, MD, Ph.D. and Harvard Professor. The session is customized to prepare first responders to integrate the SMART Program into their departments. Upon completion, trainers can deliver the SMART Program to other responders at the discretion of HEART 9/11. This training is best suited for department champions (trainers), FTOs and academy instructors.

*Programs are best delivered in person; however, they can be made available remotely/virtually.

Strength + Resiliency Training

HEART 9/11 Strength + Resiliency training introduces healthy and enriching disciplines for the workforce. Through this peer-to-peer program, individuals learn a variety of self-care interventions, allowing them to build a course of action to manage stress and improve their overall health and well-being. Topics include stress management strategies, such as cognitive and behavioral approaches, mindfulness, guided meditation, how to elicit the relaxation response and social support.

The training is taught by instructors certified in the evidence-based Stress Management and Resiliency Training Program (SMART) by the Benson-Henry Institute for Mind-Body Medicine, Mass. General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, and includes professional and personal lived experience.

Employers can request customized presentations to meet your needs.

I like the short segments. Easy to digest and process.  This is a topic that will be “Caught” not taught to me. Meaning the value is there only after you recognize the need.
